HELPING BANGLADESH FLOOD REFUGEES

MATTRESSES MADE FROM WASTE

We’ve teamed up with Circular Economy in Made in Bangladesh Apparels (CEMBA), which is a social enterprise dedicated to bridging the circular economy and providing a humanitarian response. CEMBA’s mission is to produce mattresses and blankets to address the humanitarian needs of the forcibly displaced population.

Hunkemöller is passionate about reducing environmental impacts and contributing to the people where we work. Bangladesh is one of the most important sourcing countries for Hunkemöller: around 33% of our products and 51% of our bras are sourced there. Two of the biggest issues in the country are displacement and textile waste. In 2018, there were more than 1.3 million internally displaced people and refugees in Bangladesh and the country also creates between 500,000 and 700,000 tons of textile waste each year.

HELP WHERE IT’S NEEDED

One of our factories in Bangladesh, Hop Lun provides the pre-consumer waste to a mattress factory, where the mattresses are made based on CEMBA’s prototype. Each mattress is estimated to absorb approximately 4,5 kg of synthetic waste. We then distribute these mattresses to flooding refugees.
